Hunting Island to reopen beach access on Tuesday

Hunting Island State Park’s beach access will be reopened to the public starting at dawn, tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10th, after clean up efforts following Hurricane dorian have been completed, according to a release by Friends of Hunting Island to it’s members.

“The day use picnic areas, parking lots and shelters will be open, along with the beach,” said spokesperson, Carol Corbin.

According to information provided, the campground and trails will reopen sometime around Friday, September 20th.

Hunting Island beach, campground and state park did not sustain any major damage from Hurricane Dorian, but clean up efforts will continue for several days to come.

“This could have been so much worse and we are all fortunate that Dorian didn’t do a lot more damage,” said Park Ranger Carl Berube.

Exactly. It could have been worse, and we know that Hunting Island is fragile and really can’t handle much more like it saw with Matthew and Irma.

We’re grateful to the volunteers and park staff for their hard work in various efforts and we look forward to visiting when it reopens in the coming week or so.
