Locals, Port Royal Police Department, go bald for child cancer research

Port Royal’s Buzz & Brews is back for another round after an incredible turnout in its inaugural year. In 2025, more than 40 Lowcountry locals braved the shave, and the community raised nearly $25,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest charity funder of childhood cancer research grants.

This year, the Port Royal Police Department has created its own fundraising team and will be “Braving the Shave” on November 1st.

Organizers are calling on other local first responders to challenge Port Royal PD, join them in fundraising, and brave the shave.

The event will take place at Shellring Ale Works on Sunday, November 1, 2026, where local participants will gather to raise money for lifesaving childhood cancer research.

Organizer Jaye Winemiller first participated in a St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event in 2015 as a college freshman. Ten years later, she brought the tradition to the Lowcountry.
“Port Royal is a small town with a big heart,” said Winemiller. “What started as a way to commemorate my 30th birthday turned into so much more. It was incredibly moving to learn how many families in our community have been affected by cancer. It really solidified the thought that cancer knows no boundaries. Seeing this town come together, raise awareness, and step up to shave their heads in support of kids and families facing childhood cancer was something I’ll never forget.”

This year, Winemiller is challenging the community to surpass last year’s $25,000 for childhood cancer research.

Port Royal’s Buzz & Brews will feature live music, raffles, food and drinks, along with the iconic head-shaving ceremony.

The event is open to all ages, and community members can participate by shaving their heads, joining a team, making a donation, or simply coming out to support the participants.

About St. Baldrick’s Foundation
Every two minutes, a child somewhere in the world is diagnosed with cancer. In the United States, one in five children diagnosed with cancer will not survive. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the largest charity funder of childhood cancer research grants. To date, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $368 million to researchers working to improve treatments and outcomes for children with cancer.
