In a ceremony last weekend, LowCountry Habitat for Humanity dedicated its 51st home build, located at 2521 Mossy Oaks Road, and officially turned over the keys of the new home to the Sawyer family, who even brought their moving truck to the event.
The home build, named Dataw 2, was fully funded by donations from local residents and partners on Dataw Island. The land for the home build on Mossy Oaks Road was donated by the City of Beaufort. This synergy between Lowcountry Habitat, the City of Beaufort and sponsors/volunteers turned a dilapidated playground into not one but two affordable homes for families in Beaufort.
The second property right next door to this one, named the Faith Build, Home will be dedicated to the family on December 14th, and will be the 52nd home built by Lowcountry Habitat.
52 houses? That’s a whole neighborhood.
With the support of the Beaufort community working together to make this project a reality, the new home provides a hand-up to homeownership to Habitat Family Partner, Rod & Tymeca Sawyer. Rod and Tymeca have four children that will now be able to walk next door to school.
An excited crowd of approximately 70 people attended the dedication ceremony. Attendees were introduced to the Sawyer family and learned the story behind this home.
Bishop Willie Webb, Jr. from Friendship Holiness Church provided the home blessing and Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling had the honor of presenting the family with the keys to their new home.
This home is possible due to the generosity of the residents of the Dataw Island Community, Dataw Island and the continued support from Lowcountry Habitat’s partners including Publix Charities, Coastal Community Foundation, Hargray Caring Coins, The Beaufort Charities, The Junior Service League, United Way of the Lowcountry, Pepsi, JHN – Residential Building Design and Mussell-Built Structural Engineering.
“LowCountry Habitat would also like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Beaufort Community for the years of support that have led us to being able to complete our 51st home build,” a release by Lowcountry Habitat for Humanity said.
“Because of this community’s support and efforts, we are moving closer to ending substandard housing in Northern Beaufort County. We know that we are only able to accomplish this as a result of the support of our community.”
Huge congrats to the Sawyer family on achieving their dream of homeownership and we all wish the family a bright future in their new home.
About LowCountry Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. Habitat ReStores were developed to provide Habitat affiliates with another income stream for building houses while providing a place where still useful building materials and supplies can be recycled and gently-used home furnishings can be resold to new owners reducing the burden on local landfills.
