Marines from MWSS-273 aboard MCAS Beaufort brought in heavy equipment on Wednesday to help remove debris and assist in controlling the constant erosion on Hunting Island Beach and getting it ready for an upcoming renourishment project.

Every year since 2013, the Marines from the Beaufort Air Station Engineer Company have come out to lend a hand, bringing equipment to help with erosion control by removing man-made and natural debris.

Hunting Island is one of the fastest eroding beaches on the East Coast. Each year about 15 feet of sand from Hunting Island State Park beaches are eaten away by the ocean.

In 2006, The South Carolina Legislature poured $5 million into beach renourishment and according to reports there is another renourishment program on the table that should be happening sometime soon.

The Marines enjoy getting the hands on training but each time they’re there, they also leave some of the areas in their natural state.

After all, unspoiled is unspoiled, and our beloved Hunting Island is an amazing natural spot to visit.
