Netflix series Outer Banks to film part of final season at Hunting Island

Netflix’s Outer Banks will soon start filming again in a few Lowcountry spots, including Hunting Island, as the popular show heads into its fifth and final season.

Actor Drew Starkey recently shared in a May 31 post on X, “We’re going back — we’re all going to Charleston in about two weeks.” Since 2019, the hit drama has brought steady visibility to the Lowcountry, with iconic locations such the popular Hunting Island lighthouse and Shem Creek’s Wreck of the Richard and Charlene restaurant both making several appearances throughout the last 4 seasons of the show.

Madelyn Cline, a Goose Creek native, also shared her emotions in a TikTok video, expressing gratitude and excitement for filming the final season. “We’re so excited to go back one last time,” she said.

The South Carolina Film Commission has confirmed that filming will take place in Beaufort County, where Hunting Island is located, starting in May 2025. Hunting Island has been a key filming location in previous seasons, particularly for scenes involving the boneyard and the lighthouse

Filmed in Charleston and on Hunting Island filling in for the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the show follows a tight-knit group of teens, all working class teenagers known as the “Pogues” as they navigate social divides, treasure hunts, romance, and personal dramas.

The show portrays the OBX as sunny and beachy, but with a major class divide. The series centers on their quest to find a legendary treasure linked to the disappearance of John B’s father, while also dealing with rivalries with the wealthy “Kooks” and the consequences of their actions. The show explores themes of friendship, love, family, and social class.

The show has also used historic Fort Fremont on St. Helena Island for scenes in Season 2.

If you’re a fan, you’ll be happy to know that Outer Banks Season 5 will star Chase Stokes as John B., Madelyn Cline as Sarah, Madison Bailey as Kiara, Jonathan Daviss as Pope, and Carlacia Grant as Cleo. However, Rudy Pankow (JJ) is not expected to return due to his character’s death in season 4. Rudy Pankow has stated that he will not be returning, but he may appear in flashbacks. Drew Starkey (Rafe) and Austin North Topper) are expected to return for the final season.

The show has become a huge hit for Netflix and a favorite for younger generations everywhere. Some have described the show as a blend of the popular series’, Riverdale and The O.C., and some have described it as the movie Goonies, with prettier people. The show’s unique setting, relatable characters, and nostalgic elements reminiscent of “The Goonies” and “Stand By Me” have also contributed to its success. Additionally, the show’s strong fan base and vibrant online community, fueled by mystery and fan theories, further amplified its popularity.

It’s always nice to see a piece of Beaufort and the Sea Islands on television.
