A new restaurant and bar is coming to Port Royal, just across from Parris Island.
According to a report from our friends at The Island News, The Belleau Wood Tavern will soon be breaking ground at 7 Marina Blvd., and plans are to be open in the spring of 2026.
The founders of the new establishment, Zachary Green and Roy Dakroub, both former Marines, say they are building a tribute to the USMC and to “honor the legacy of the World War I Marines who earned the name Devil Dogs.”
The Battle of Belleau Wood was a major battle that occurred during the German spring offensive in World War I, near the Marne River in France. The U.S. casualties from the legendary battle totaled 9,777, including 1,811 killed.
Marines were called “Devil Dogs” after their ferocious fighting during the Battle of Belleau Wood, where German soldiers reportedly referred to them as “Teufelshunden” (devil dogs) due to their tenacity and ferocity. The term originated from the Germans’ experience encountering the Marines, who fought with extreme courage and determination in difficult conditions in the dense woods with hand-to-hand combat. The nickname stuck and became a symbol of Marine Corps spirit, eventually linked to the English Bulldog mascot.

“Nestled just outside the gates of MCRD Paris Island, the very birthplace of generations of Marines, Belleau Wood Tavern is the landmark gathering location for the nations most seasoned veterans as well as our newly minted Marines and their families,” says the tavern’s website. ”
Breaking ground on November 10, 2025, the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps, the report says the new bar & restaurant will be a tribute to the Marine Corps, welcoming all Marines past & present, and will be adorned with Marine Corps relics including drill instructor hats, unit plaques, photos and lots more.
