A new study by an auto insurance rate website suggests that South Carolina’s drivers are quite far from the best. CarInsuranceComparison.com recently released its list of the 10 states with the worst drivers and the Palmetto State has a less-than-stellar ranking on it. It doesn’t say SC drivers are the worst, but its pretty darn close.
South Carolina tied with Montana to take the 3rd worst state in terms of drivers, both of which had auto accident death rate as their worst category, according to the study.
States were ranked based on the failure of drivers to obey local traffic laws, careless driving, drunk driving, accident death rate and speeding.
According to CarInsuranceComparison.com, South Carolina has the worst accident death rate among the top 10 but it’s also among worst for careless driving numbers regarding cyclist deaths.
SC drivers also took the 2nd spot for speeding with 45.85% of all fatal accidents in the state involving the use of excessive speed.
One of the things that needs to be taken into consideration is the amount of remote rural areas in each state.
Some regions have the worst drivers due to factors such as lax traffic laws and a lack of traffic monitoring”, the article said. “Remote areas often do not have traffic monitoring. This encourages drivers to kick it into high gear and race recklessly on the roads.”
New Mexico and Texas were tied for the #1 spot and are considered to have the worst drivers in the country.
