Sadly, folks won’t be taking the plunge into the Atlantic Ocean this New Year’s Day. Friends of Hunting Island has announced that the January 1st, 2021 Pelican Plunge event has officially been canceled.

“It is with careful consideration and deliberation that our organization has made the decision to cancel our Annual New Years Day event,” the organization said in a Facebook post.

“Due to the current Covid-19 environment, it was determined that for the safety and well being of our Hunting Island visitors, members and families, canceling this event is the prudent thing to do.”

“[We] look forward to restoring all that Hunting Island provides our community in the not too distant future.”

That still shouldn’t stop you from visiting the beach at Hunting Island State Park and perhaps even taking your very own ‘dip’ into the water.

The Hunting Island Pelican Plunge is one of our favorite annual events and hundreds take the plunge each year. Tax deductible proceeds benefit Hunting Island State Park’s beach and trail maintenance and wildlife habitats and conservation, including the sea turtle program.
