Port Royal has been named one of the 50 most overlooked [underrated] towns in America, according to an online review site that researches places to live based on prices. These towns, an article published last week in Cheapism titled “American Beauties” says, usually don’t get extensive attention, despite the appeal that they have to visitors and locals alike.
The website selected Port Royal as the most overlooked town in all of South Carolina.
“Whether you’re planning a road trip, cruising toward retirement, choosing colleges, moving for work, or just looking for a change of pace, every state in America has a destination that you’ve heard people rave about,” Cheapism said.
“But popular doesn’t equal paradise — for that, you’ll have to dig a little deeper.”
“We scoured online reviews and rankings to uncover desirable destinations that don’t typically get extensive national attention, yet offer tremendous value to visitors and locals alike. Our selections took into account towns with a range of attractive offerings, including cultural attractions, outdoor activities, great dining and shopping options, low cost of living, and high quality of life, among other factors.”
For South Carolina’s spot on the list, it’s Port Royal.
“Established just 70 years after Columbus first set sail for the New World, Port Royal is tucked away in the nucleus of the Carolina Lowcountry between Battery Creek and the Beaufort River.”
“Billed as “one of America’s leaders in small town new urbanism,” Port Royal beckons anyone considering relocation to the south with a blend of impressive environmental offerings as well as abundant in-town amenities.”
That sounds about right to us.
Port Royal may be overlooked, but locals know that it’s a special town. Having grown immensely in the past 10-15 years, the town government has worked really hard to promote its brand identity and to make sure everyone knows the appeal of living, working, playing and doing business there. With the super popular Sands beach and boardwalk, the town has worked to add new amenities in the past several years including the development of the amazing Cypress Wetlands area and the new Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve. The port is under development with big thing coming, and just about half of the area’s festivals are held somewhere in town. There’s certainly lots to see and enjoy in Port Royal.
What about our neighbors? The most underrated town in Georgia is Athens, and Asheville was considered the most underrated in North Carolina. St. Augustine was selected for Florida.
Also, earlier this month, Port Royal earned the distinction of being listed among the top 10 safest cities in South Carolina. Read about that here.
