Following some confusion on Tuesday as to whether it was open or not, the Town of Port Royal has officially decided to reopen the Sands Beach and boardwalk, in a limited capacity, starting Wednesday, April 22nd.

On Monday afternoon, Beaufort County issued a widely-circulated press release stating that they were reopening public access to beaches and waterways for recreation and fishing at noon on Tuesday, in accordance with S.C. Gov. McMaster’s Monday afternoon order.

This included The Sands in Port Royal, along with several other locations in both northern and southern Beaufort County. On Tuesday at noon, folks learned that the Sands Beach in Port Royal was actually not reopened.

In a press release late Monday afternoon, the town said the reopening will be at Noon on Wednesday, with restrictions in place.

The Town will reopen Sands Beach to walking, running, and cycling tomorrow. The following items are not permitted on Sands Beach:

– Motor vehicles
– Golf carts
– Chairs
– Coolers
– Beach towels
– Umbrellas

Town officials feel that this is not an exhaustive list, and will reserve the right to review and amend it as necessary.

These actions are being taken in deference to Governor McMaster’s “home or work” order, which allows South Carolinians to go to work, visit family and buy essential goods or services.

The order does allow exercising outdoors or going for a walk, so the Town has crafted the reopening to respect the executive order and give access to citizens within the law.

Users of Sands Beach must comply with social distancing guidelines and improper gatherings of more than three individuals will be dispersed. Failure to comply will result in penalties per the executive order and could also result in a trespass notice to violators.

Many communities are choosing not to reopen facilities; however, the Town has faith that our citizens and visitors will choose to abide by the laws, which will allow Sands Beach to remain open.

After Sands Beach reopens, its new hours will be from 8am to 5pm.
