Due to extensive damage from Hurricane Helene, Beaufort County Public Works has closed the Boat Landing at The Sands in Port Royal until further notice.
As seen in the photo, the Henry Robinson Boardwalk was severely damaged in the storm. There was also some damage to the floating dock. The landing area was closed to the public by the Town of Port Royal Police Department on the morning after the hurricane, September 27th.
Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Big Bend area of the Florida Gulf Coast as a Category 4 storm late in the evening of September 26th.
Although we saw damage in the Beaufort/Port Royal area, Helene’s largest impacts were across the southern Appalachians where widespread severe and unprecedented flooding occurred with hundreds of fatalities and billions in property damage.
County Public Works is working with marine contractors to assess the extent of the damage to the closed Sands boat landing. Repair work will begin as soon as possible.
