In a symbolic gesture of unity, remembrance, and patriotism, the Charleston 250 Committee will present an historic Liberty Tree sapling to the Beaufort 250 Committee on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, at 11:30 a.m.The presentation will take place at the historic Beaufort Arsenal, located at 713 Craven Street in downtown Beaufort, and marks a meaningful moment in the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The Liberty Tree sapling, a direct descendant of the last-known standing trees that once stood as powerful symbols of colonial resistance during the American Revolution, will be officially handed off to Mayor Phil Cromer and the City of Beaufort during this commemorative event. The ceremony highlights the collaboration between communities across South Carolina as they prepare for the Sestercentennial—a nationwide celebration of 250 years of American history and heritage.

“This sapling represents more than just a tree—it is a living connection to our shared past and the ideals that fueled our nation’s founding,” said Rich Thomas from the Beaufort 250 Committee. “We are proud to pass it on to the City of Beaufort as a symbol of liberty and remembrance.”

The Beaufort 250 Committee has planned a series of educational and cultural events to mark the Sestercentennial, and the planting of the Liberty Tree sapling, which will occur at a later date, will serve as a cornerstone for these celebrations.
