Nearly 2,000 hopeful kids of all ages turned out for the latest Shark Tooth Frenzy treasure hunt on a beautiful Saturday morning to enjoy a day at The Sands in Port Royal and to hopefully find a one-of-a-kind prize.
It’s a local tradition for kids to hunt for sharks teeth at The Sands, but successful hunts can be few and far between. This is about the ninth time we’ve had one with volunteers and organizers burying and scattering hundreds of shark teeth, megalodon teeth, arrowheads and fossils…so local children can discover them.
While many folks arrived an hour before the event began at 930am, it didn’t take long for kids to turn up some amazing hidden treasures.
Some kids smiled as they cradled a huge megalodon tooth or tiny shark tooth; while others were on a mission, sifting huge piles of sand through plastic and steel colanders along with homemade contraptions…doing whatever they had to do to fine the big one.
Audrey Flores with Shark Teeth Expeditions in Charleston has taken over for the Shark Tooth Fairy, Mike Harris, in organizing the yearly event.
Her mission
Audrey, whose father was U.S. Navy diver and has been involved with sharks teeth all of her life, works for the March of Dimes and sees these events as a great way to raise awareness and donates some of the proceeds to their mission of leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies.
“We’re excited that Mike was here to enjoy it with us for the second year in a row,” a noticeably tired Audrey said after telling us she’s been there working since 1am Saturday.
“Creating these memories with your family is what Shark Teeth Expeditions is all about and these events help make it even more memorable,” she added.
“Thank you to everyone who came out to the event, we wouldn’t be able to do it without parents like you, your shark tooth loving kids…and their imaginations.”
Thank you, Audrey, for what you do for the kids in Beaufort.
