According to a new “study” by career-site Zippia, South Carolina is the 2nd grossest state in the country.
The extremely unscientific, data-starved and off the wall study looked at factors like dirty air, the spread of illness, and trash.
The Palmetto State’s neighbors, North Carolina (3rd) and Georgia (8th) also scored, er, low on the list.
Strangely enough, Florida, which is known for being a bit, gross, came in at 29th on the list, tied with New Hampshire.
The list of 50 grossest states is:

To measure the dirtiness of the air, they referred to Air Filters Delivered‘s thorough ranking on air quality.
For the trash rating, Zippia simply used the EPA’s data on the percentage of each state’s land that is taken up by landfills.
They also looked at the CDC’s ranking on spread of illness in each state, because sneezing, coughing, and spreading diseases is pretty gross.
From there, they decided to add some cultural factors by total Google searches for mayonnaise recipes and Croc wearing.
Yeah, quite unscientific. South Carolina is far from being the 2nd grossest.
The site admitted that South Carolina has some pretty charming and downright jaw dropping sights, but also that some states could stand to improve their air quality, be a little less trashy, and consider foods not based around mayo.
We love mayo!
