Dempsey Farms will reopen on Thursday, February 13th at 10am for strawberry picking.
Locals were treated to an early taste of spring when Dempsey Farms on St. Helena Island announced on Saturday morning that they were opening for early season strawberry picking for the day.
It’s OK to do a double-take on that previous paragraph. Lots of locals did when they scrolled past the announcement on their Facebook news feeds.
It’s spring, Beaufort-style.
And, it’s here.
The fields opened at 2pm and business was brisk, just like the early February weather. If you missed out, don’t be sour; they’ll be open again for the day on Monday at 10am.
The annual spring opening at Dempsey’s kicks off one of the favorite times of the year for many locals, spanning a few generations.
There’s nothing like grabbing the kids and going for a drive down Sea Island Parkway on St.Helena Island and pulling up to the familiar red & white sign on the right side of the highway.
A trip to to the fields is a rite of passage for many of Beaufort’s kids…and plenty of adults. Grabbing a Dempsey Farms strawberry basket and venturing out into the strawberry fields in search of the perfect plump red berry is a springtime favorite in these parts.
Dempsey’s warns that hours will be limited this early in the season. It’s best to visit their Facebook page for hourly updates.
Dempsey Farms U Pick is located at 1576 Sea Island Parkway on St. Helena Island.
We can almost taste it now… a Dempsey Farms strawberry. Mmmm…..
