Did you know that Beaufort’s Tidalholm was recently named the most famous historic house in all of South Carolina by Country Living Magazine?
In it’s recent article ’50 Most Famous Historic Houses in America’, Country Living selected Tidalholm as South Carolina’s most popular house, saying it’s ‘an architectual beauty.’
Over the years, the private residence that was built way back in 1853 by Mr. Edgar Fripp has been used as a summer retreat by Fripp and his family, a Union hospital for the treatment of officers during the Civil War, and when Hollywood came knocking it became the setting for the films The Big Chill and the Great Santini; which is why many of the locals here in the Beaufort area also refer to Tidalholm as ‘The Big Chill House’.
Other notable houses that made Country Living’s list included The Biltmore, Fallingwater and the House of Seven Gables. Also, Elvis Presley’s Graceland, the Christmas Story House in Cleveland, Henry Ford’s estate and George Washington’s Mount Vernon were on the list each representing their respective States.
Tidalholm is certainly in some great company there, and it’s really an honor for this big beautiful house in little ol’ Beaufort to be among those named on Country Living’s list.
