The weekend is here and there’s lots of fun things to do all across the Beaufort area. With the arrival of May, things really start to heat up in the Lowcountry.

The weather looks cooperative for a beautiful weekend, with highs in the low to mid-80s and a 50-50 chance of rain on Friday and then again on Sunday morning.

With decent weather, get out and explore the outdoors a bit. Hunting Island Beach might just be the thing you need this weekend, and it’s unlikely the kids will complain. You can always stop by Dempsey Farms on the way and grab some fresh local strawberries for a snack at the beach.

Explore some of our local historic spots, there sure are enough of them. This is Beaufort SC, after all. Walk the sacred grounds of the Sheldon Church, explore Fort Fremont and the beach at Lands End. If 85° is too much for you, stay indoors and tour any of the Beaufort area’s five unique museums or even the Port Royal Sound Foundation’s Maritime Center.

What’s going on?

There’s a full slate of events planned across the area this weekend, and there’s definitely something going on for everyone.

The annual Taste of Beaufort festival takes over downtown Beaufort’s Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park on Friday & Saturday featuring great food, music, entertainment, arts & crafts, a Saturday morning 5K run/walk and lot more. Admission to the park is free, and tickets can be purchased to purchase food from the dozen or so local restaurants that will be set up in the park sharing their best local recipes. The community fun starts on Friday evening. See the full Taste of Beaufort schedule here.

Start your Saturday off with a visit to the Port Royal Farmers Market at the Naval Heritage Park in Port Royal. It runs from 9am to 12pm and you’ll find a fantastic selection of local produce, seafood, homemade cheeses & breads, honey and lots of other goodies.

On Saturday morning, Port Royal is throwing a birthday party at the Cypress Wetlands…for the birds. Celebrate the birth of hundreds of new wading birds and witness the wonder of nature up close during this free, fun community event, now in its 7th year. Kids enjoy a scavenger hunt at 9am and there will also be costumed bird greeters, face painting and birthday cake for everyone. More info.

There’s a fun-filled Saturday morning planned at The Sands in Port Royal with this spring’s Shark Tooth Frenzy Treasure Hunt. Organizers will hide hundreds and hundreds of ancient (HUGE!) megalodon teeth and other large shark’s teeth and fossils along the beach and in the water and kids get to hunt for them and find the prize of a lifetime. The hunt is scheduled from 930am to 130pm and proceeds benefit the March of Dimes. Get all the info here.

While you’re in Port Royal for the Birthday Party for the Birds or the Shark Tooth Frenzy on Saturday, pop into the Grand Opening Celebration of the new Port Royal Veterinary Hospital on Paris Avenue. Help them celebrate and tour the new facility, meet the doctors and staff, see FrankenTeddy. Noah’s Ark, Humane Association of the Lowcountry, Little Friends Wildlife and have fun with the folks from 104.9 the Surf. More info.

If you like to read comic books or think your kids would be interested then you’ll definitely enjoy Free Comic Book Day at Flashback Gear on Bay Street in downtown Beaufort from 10am to 6pm on Saturday. It’s the perfect opportunity to introduce kids and friends to the world of comic book reading. From super-heroes and science fiction to action/adventure and manga, Free Comic Book Day has a free comic book for everyone including fans of Avengers, Spider Man, Doctor Who, Star Wars and lots more. Get all the info here.

As you can see, there’s plenty to do in the Beaufort area. And, there’s always something for everyone. Keep up with all the local Beaufort SC events on our Explore Beaufort Event Calendar. Or, just say ‘no’ to the crowds and Explore Beaufort SC on your own.
