Beaufort and her beautiful sea islands got lucky on Monday as tropical storm Isaias held off the coast just enough to give Beaufort a bit of a breeze. The area saw about an inch of rain and the sun was out before dinner time; and Hunting Island was spared any damage by Isaias.
Thank goodness.
We’re very glad to hear that the beach is fine, the dunes are fine, the campground is not flooded and the roads haven’t suffered any additional damage.
That’s great news. She’s a bit fragile right now.
Reports say that there was minimal beach erosion, with pools of standing water left on the beach due to the high tides and large waves. At one point the tide from Isaias reached Hunting Island’s new dunes, but they didn’t suffer any damage.
There was no word as of late Monday night if any sea turtle nests had been washed out by the waves.
Hunting Island did not close on Monday during the threat of the passing storm and will be open normal hours on Tuesday.
According to Weather.com, Isaias made landfall in southern North Carolina near Ocean Isle Beach as a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.
In addition to heavy winds, rain and a storm surge, it also sprouted a few tornadoes and caused damage to homes on Oak Island in North Carolina as it came ashore at approximately 11:10pm.
