Annual New Years Day Pelican Plunge

Join in the fun with Friends of Hunting Island at the annual Pelican Plunge into the (semi) cold water at Hunting Island Beach.
A fun event that supports taking care of the state park, the Pelican Plunge is in its 12th year with hundreds of “plungers” enjoying the semi-cold water temps in the low 60s. (easy peasy!)
Last year’s event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the fun is back and is scheduled for New Year’s Day, January 1, 2022 at Noon.
Everyone meets at the pavilion at the lighthouse on North Beach. Come early and enjoy the pre-plunge festivities. Plungers can enjoy beverages, snacks, and the traditional fun costume parade—which gets more outrageous every year.
- Registration is from 11:30–12 Noon, Plunge at 1 PM
- Register online and receive your ticket via email
- Each registrant receives an “I Took the Plunge” sticker and two coupons worth $1 each to purchase refreshments including snacks, hot cocoa, and coffee
- Souvenir Pelican Plunge T-shirts will be on sale at the gift shop
- Park entry fee is not included in the registration fee, but January 1, 2022 is the last day to use your 2021 Friends of Hunting Island decal for park entry
- You can purchase your Friends of Hunting Island 2022 membership and parking decal at the Pelican Plunge
Tickets are only $10 for adults and $5 for children.
The Pelican Plunge is one of our favorite annual events and hundreds take the plunge each year. Tax deductible proceeds benefit Hunting Island State Park’s beach and trail maintenance and wildlife habitats and conservation, including the sea turtle program.
