South Carolina State Parks are reopening. South Carolina State Parks, including Hunting Island, will reopen on a limited basis on May 1st, the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism, said via email on Tuesday afternoon.
All state parks closed March 28 in an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. These closures were set to last through April 30.
“Group facilities like community buildings and picnic shelters will remain closed, however, and parks will limit the number of visitors to maintain a reasonable setting for social distancing,” the release said.
With the stay at home orders lasting quite awhile, some folks are looking forward to the expansive beach at Hunting Island reopen.
The state park system includes 47 locations with four of the parks having beach access on the Atlantic.
The park reopenings mark the latest easing of coronavirus-related restrictions on daily life in South Carolina.
On Monday, Gov. Henry McMaster lifted statewide bans on public beach access, as well as certain retail stores. There was confusion on Tuesday as to whether The Sands beach in Port Royal was reopened or not.
