Veterans with no family being laid to rest at Beaufort National Cemetery

The military says, ‘no man left behind.’ That’s why four veterans are being laid to rest next week at the Beaufort National Cemetery and the invitation for attendance is open to literally anyone and everyone.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office has asked volunteers to attend the services of four veterans who are being interred at our Beaufort National Cemetery because none of the four have any surviving family.

The four veterans are:

Francis Lanerghan, United States Marine Corps

Lawrence Davis, United States Army

William Goldberg, United States Army

Echaron Kelly, United States Army

We’re very happy to see that the Coroner’s office is stepping up to make sure these heroes are laid to rest with people there to honor their lives and their service to our Veterans with no family being laid to rest at Beaufort National CemeteryCountry. One day, very soon, we will no longer have any WWII or Korean War veterans left…and we will not have the privilege of honoring them any longer.

The services are planned for Thursday, November 18th, at 11am, at the Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort SC.

If you can spare an hour out of your day to attend and to help give these heroes the love and respect they deserve as they return to the Earth from which they came…please do.

The Beaufort National Cemetery is one of six national cemeteries that were established for the re-interment of Union soldiers and sailors who died in the region during the Civil War. It was designated by President Abraham Lincoln on February 10th, 1863. Today, more than 19,000 lie at rest in the Beaufort National Cemetery; veterans from every single major U.S. conflict in history. Managed by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the 33 acre, peaceful, final resting place for these heroes was listed on the National Register of Historic Places back in 1997.

According to the Coroner’s Office, in addition to the veterans’ interment, there will also be an interment of the cremated remains of 30 unclaimed decedents at Forest Lawn Cemetery, some of which have been at the Beaufort County Coroner’s office since the mid-1980s. The ceremony is scheduled for November 18th at 2pm. Forest Lawn Cemetery is located at 611 Robert Smalls Parkway in Beaufort.
