The Spanish Moss Trail may be growing as new plans are proposed to take it into downtown Beaufort.

Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail has proposed a 10-foot-wide paved pathway from one of its local trail heads down Depot Road, across Ribaut Road, and down along Bay Street to Charles Street.

A posting on the Spanish Moss Trail’s website says that the new connection would allow users a way to get downtown to enjoy shopping and restaurants as well as the views of the Beaufort River.

“The Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail are actively advocating for a 1.2 mile formal Downtown Beaufort Connector that would run along the most scenic route from the corner of Bay/Charles Street to the ceremonial heart of the Trail at the Depot Road Trailhead. Currently, there is no safe way for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate between the Trail and downtown Beaufort. The goal is to help develop a clear, safe, environmentally sensitive, ADA-compliant public path that could also offer one of the most spectacular waterfront recreational experience in the Southeast,” the website says.

The path would also take away the parking along Bay Street on the bluff overlooking the Beaufort River.

The trail currently extends 10 miles from Port Royal up to Grays Hill and will soon also run to the waterfront in Port Royal as well.
