Where the Locals Go: St. Helena Island's Foolish Frog

Beaufort, SC is blessed to have some of the best restaurants in the Lowcountry right here, and when you’re exploring the area and are looking for local fare, you always go where the locals go. And, lots of them go to the Foolish Frog on St. Helena Island.

Most folks are acutely familiar with a seafood boil famously known as Frogmore stew. This mashpot of fresh shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob, and red potatoes (jackets-on) is seasoned heartily and served family-style in a still-steaming pot that’s dropped right on the table.

The mouthwatering dish is an undeniably satisfying choice every single time. But most visitors are unaware the dish was first conceived in the Frogmore community on St. Helena Island – and that it’s still served daily at an unassuming, yet very welcoming, roadside eatery known as the Foolish Frog.

Whether you’re a wide-eyed hungry traveler in search of fresh seafood or a local in the mood for no-fuss dining, the local sea island spot has much to offer, starting with its (lack of) roadside appeal–which most will tell you is the appeal. So do not pass up the chance to discover the goodness awaiting inside.

Savor your local fare in climate-controlled comfort inside the restaurant, or choose a marsh-view table out on the deck and prepare to feast. They’ve got the best of everything for family dining, date night, or the perfect table for two. In addition to their famous Frogmore Pot, select from traditional Lowcountry items such as flounder, fried shrimp, crab cakes, scallops, and their signature Shrimp & Grits.

The restaurant is very popular for the variety of oysters served there, including oysters on the half shell, local oyster clusters, raw oysters, Oysters Rockafeller, and charg-rilled oysters. Other delicious seafood choices include a snow crab pot, several fried seafood options, and peel & eat shrimp; in addition to the already mentioned Frogmore stew brimming with the most famous dish on St. Helena Island.

Cris & Carmen Morrison, the owners of the establishment, pride themselves on matching the expectations of their customers with a high-quality, memorable dining experience expected when visiting a low-key, no-frills post-office-turned-restaurant sandwiched between the main highway and the beautiful marshes surrounding the island.

To that end, make no mistake: it’s a come-as-you-are casual dining experience that’s perfect for the entire family. There are no white table cloths, no dress codes, and there’s an overwhelming lack of pretension.

Sounds perfect, right?
