Study ranks South Carolina roads worst in the U.S.

Everyone always complains about the roads in their home state and lots of folks from South Carolina say that ours have got to be the worst in the country. Now, there’s a little slice of proof to go with that. A 2020 Consumer Affairs study ranks South Carolina roads as the worst in the U.S.

The study analyzed road conditions by states. South Carolina came in 1st place as the state with worst roads. The Palmetto State was followed by Louisiana, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Delaware.

The study rated Wyoming as having the best roads in the U.S., followed by Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota and Montana. Residents from these states remarked on the roads’ smooth pavement, recent repairs and lack of debris. Many people commented on their governments’ quick seasonal weather cleanup.

The study determined which state had the worst roads by comparing four factors:

  • Amount spent per mile of road
  • Motor crash fatalities on roads per mile
  • Percentage of roads in poor, fair and good condition
  • Consumer Affairs email survey

Residents of of South Carolina said the roads have potholes, illegible street signs and regular heavy congestion.

“Each factor was normalized, rescaled and weighted, which allowed our researchers to assign some data greater or lesser importance,” the Consumer Affairs study reported. “Next, the scores from each factor were combined to produce final scores.”

Also, another recent study determined that South Carolina has the #2 worst drivers in the whole country.

Stay safe out there.
